mopeds are pesty. i dont have anything against their owners, i just dont like them. how are they even louder than motorcycles?! :/ mmmh.
Their sad, tiny, vestigial pedals look grotesque to me.
Maybe this is not a cut and dried yes or no type of question. Perhaps we should look at it this way. Scooter and moped drivers should be allowed on the roads; the owners, after all, are trying to reduce their costs on our environment. I don't think it's fair to look down our noses at anyone in this pursuit. It is up to the local authorities whether there is enough space to safely share the bike lane.
I kind of agree, anniebikes, I don't see it as cut and dried. Many of them are just on their way to work, or using their mopeds to make a living, by delivering food in Manhattan for example, where the electric ones are already illegal as I understand it, but are widespread. Also, we should consider that it seems that they are more or less admitted to many of the bike routes of the European bike empire. At least as shown on several youtube videos.
Don't bike racks entail a certain level of jostling with other bikes? Wouldn't a motion alarm on a moped go off often? And I'm thinking electric moped owners would be lobbying for charging infrastructure installation, totally understandable, but likely to come out of the bike parking budget which is already generally miniscule.

I've got no problems with them if they're a force to bring in broader infrastructure, as long as they don't represent a major step up in hazard for other road users.
I don't have a problem with this, none at all. The more use of bike racks, the more demand for quality bike racks and properly placed racks will result. And the safety in numbers thing: the more use of bike racks the safer it becomes for bikes, e-bikes, mopeds and users. I don't think propulsion itself is relevant.
Don and Steve, I'm not sure I have a problem with it either. But I am trying to understand what bike racks are for, then. Are motorcycles OK? Segways? Can the landscapers park their tools and machinery at them? Does type or category matter? The definitional part of my mind wants to think that bike racks are for bicycles, that bike lanes are also for bicycles. So it's probably a self-understanding thing--is my understanding wrong? I have a sense that it's more of a usage governance issue than definitional. Pedestrians are permitted on roadways in many cases, and that is managed by setting up laws to define how that works, where they walk, and right of way. For example, I would be OK with electric mopeds driving on the sidewalk (to use an extreme example) if laws to keep them below 5pmh (say) in that setting were made and enforced.
If we're talking about bike racks(you know, the ones we use when shopping, dining)...most of them are on private property. They exist to increase tenant sales and the attractiveness of the property or pad. Therefore, I would think such an enlightened property owner would keep out landscapers and their irritating tools, motorcycles, cars, SUVs, Hummvees. And would have the power to do so.
