There was some adventure |
Three days of hiking and swimming in Havasu Canyon, no cars down there, just rocky trails and stunning waterfalls to swim under. I feel fortunate to live in Arizona, where this experience is just a few hours of driving and hiking away. More photos.

Holy smokes that is some beautiful country. As you say, you are lucky indeed.
ReplyDeleteDiggin the waterfall!
ReplyDeleteFantastic looking country....
ReplyDeleteI would love to spend some time on a backpacking trip there...
You are really lucky to live so close.

Trevor, a lot of people do pack down there, and stay in the campground. It's about a ten mile hike down through rocky canyons like the ones in the photo. The campground is right along the stream, near the waterfalls. You can hear the sound of the blue waters running all the time.
DeleteI picked up a book about the Havasupai people called "I am the Grand Canyon" which is fascinating me, and helping me to gain more understanding of the place and the people who live there.
ReplyDeleteHavasupai is one of my favorite hikes in The Canyon.
ReplyDeleteIt's been years, though, ever since my son finished up Scouts and my feet gave up on me. *sigh*
One thing about this hike, it feels a little bit more on a human scale somehow. I like the North Rim, too, but it's all about vastness and feeling overwhelmed and basically like a speck of cosmic dust.
DeleteLOL! Even SMALLER, JRA! Whenever I came down from the North Rim, I felt a MOLECULE in a speck of cosmic dust!
DeleteJRA, do you have to get a permit to hike and camp there? The landscape is stunning.
ReplyDeleteThere's no day hiking allowed, which leaves either camping or staying at the lodge. The entry permit is $35 per person per whole visit, you get a bright tag that you fasten to your pack. At the time of this comment, the lodge is $145 a night (up to 4 people). It gets booked up a long time in advance, more details are at http://www.havasupaitribe.com/lodge.html . Camping is $22 per person per night, it looks like. If you stay at the lodge, you get the tag when you check in at the lodge.
