| Breakfast to get you there and back |
For the winter commute, and by "winter" I mean when the temperature drops below 50F in Phoenix, I like a hot breakfast. My current favorite is my version of "super oats": Coach's Oats with mixed unsalted nuts and dried fruit, sometimes a spoon of peanut butter or Nutella, and a splash of milk or vanilla soy milk. Coach's Oats are a great find, as they are very similar to steel cut or Irish oats, except they cook in microwave in 2.5 minutes. This is fuel for my commute. What's yours?

I have to take some medicine every morning that has to sit on an empty stomach for an hour before I eat, so I end up eating at work everyday. I usually eat plain yogurt with some sweetener. But oatmeal is nice this time of year. I've had good luck making a big batch of steel cut oats on the weekend, and then reheating every day through the week.
ReplyDeleteI bicycle to work and then get offered a nice free breakfast by my doting and solicitous employer. I always choose the vegan steel cut oats and I add flax seed, walnuts, dried apricots and some honey.
ReplyDeleteBefore I retired I would always have a cup of coffee and a large bowl of porridge with a sliced banana in it before setting off on my cycling commute...
ReplyDeleteNuts and a slice or two of lunch meat.
ReplyDeletejohn my commute this morning was minus ten celsius - there's a long way to go before it gets "cold". the coldest commute i did was thirty below celsius. the gears froze and wouldn't change. i coudn't feel my feet, my fingers, my face. my lips didn't work that well for a little while but it's a great story!!! fuel - coffee, bagels or crumpets, and a dr. pepper on arrival!!! ha! steven
ReplyDeleteYou know when I look at your bowl of oats, it looks really good, but I've never been a fan of cooked oats or oatmeal, or anything of that consistency. I stick with egg and ham on a tortilla shell with yogurt and milk as my daily commute fuel.
ReplyDeleteI also find that my stomach seems to rebel if I eat before working out and riding in the morning, so I take mine to work and eat it as I settle in.
springfieldcyclist.com and Steve A, I like a full protein caveman Paleo diet breakfast as much as the next carnivore, but in terms of ease of preparation as well as heartwarming goodness, super-oats are hard for me to beat. I was eating cold leftover chicken breasts and fresh fruit for a long time, this is better, IMHO.
ReplyDeletechafed, are there any openings at your employer?
steven, I think if I were commuting in that cold a temperature, I would be eating...well, know, commuting would imply that I lived somewhere like that, and I've decided not to do that again. If it's cold enough to freeze gears, it's too cold for me.
Trevor, porridge, hmmm. Like the 3 Bears ate? I'll have to g00gl3 that.
cycler, my sister once prepared a breakfast fit for a king from homemade kefir, granola, and fresh blueberries. I would have that every morning and be happy.
whoa, "know" instead of "no", that's a crazy typo. I don't no. Know reason to change it. I no I need more coffee, however.
ReplyDeleteYumm
ReplyDelete2 or 3 bananas, almonds, 1/2 bar of dark chocolate, a bowl of cereals with soy milk and a spoon of sesame seeds. That's when it gets really cold here in the mountains.
ReplyDeleteseb I tried to alter my formula this morning to make a smaller bowl. I looked away long enough to read your comment, then it all ended in tears: oatmeal volcano, microwave all gooped up. So now trying a half shredded wheat, half oatmeal combo with what's left.
