What's That Sound?

I came upon this gentleman with his high wheeler or penny farthing as he was bent over peering at the hub. He had just stopped because it was making a sound that concerned him. Which made me laugh, since that means that as long as bicycles have existed, around 1870, concerned riders have been bending down to analyze a worrying sound. "My bike is making an odd sound," now a phrase I need to learn in the language of a country before I visit. I would have shown him my new wheel, but I doubt that he would have been impressed. Traditional velocipede apparel augmented with Ipod, and a U-lock stuck in a leather holder on his belt. He said it was the best way to lock it up. Get (way) up. Go ride.

  1. I've always wondered how one manages to get started on one of those. Seems his model is missing the step up in the rear.
